Pango Bug
There is a Pango bug with respect to Kannada rendering on GNU/Linux systems. A patch has been filed on Pango bugzilla.
Problem definition (copied from the bug I filed):
Pango rendering splits the glyphs U+0C8E (ಎ) and U+0C82 (anusvaara) when they appear in sequence.
Steps to reproduce: 1. Type the word ಎಂಬ ("eMba" with SCIM-m17n kn-itrans selection). 2. Paste the same on Kate or Kwrite.
You'll notice the difference in rendering of the split maatra.

Open Type Font
There is no reasonable Open Type font yet for use on Linux. The only sane font as yet has been Tunga (which itself has had some issues). The fonts released by TDIL last year are mostly like fonts fit for DTP use (although most of them look ugly and are of little use). There is a need for an Open Type font for general use (screen).
Font Preference issues
Keymaps - SCIM, and others.
